SPECIALISATION
Andrew Sheard's patent practice concentrates on the biosciences. He has written and prosecuted, worldwide, many patent applications; conducted European opposition and appeal proceedings both for opponents and for applicants or patentees; participated in UK and overseas patent litigation and other proceedings; advised on many third party patent matters; helped start-up companies formulate appropriate patent strategies and developed and participated in in-house training both for patent professionals and non-specialists.
Practically all of his work has been undertaken in the biosciences. Subject matter he has routinely dealt with includes recombinent DNA technology; antibody engineering and other aspects of immunology; transgenic animals (for production of high volume compounds in milk and for xenotransplantation); developmental biology (including cell nuclear replacement); genomics; proteomics; general biochemistry; organic chemistry (for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, pesticides and other bioactive compounds) and formulation and physical chemistry (again, for bioactive compounds).
His practice is now divided into three main areas:
Opinion work
including patent validity and infringement opinions and due diligence investigations.
Advocacy
including written and oral advocacy at all instances of the European Patent Office.
Strategic advice
particularly for bioscience start-up companies.
